Your child has been referred to occupational therapy, now what?
by Jackeline Gurdian, MS OTR/L
If your child has been referred to Occupational Therapy, schedule
a session as soon as possible, as early intervention is key! While you wait for
your OT evaluation and treatment to begin, here are some of my favorite affordable
must have toys and activities in the home to work on fine motor and visual
motor skills from birth to 3 years of age.
- Containers (to take items out and then put back in)
- Rings
- Rattles
- Activity mat: lots and lots of tummy time
- Stacking cups
- Balls: Turn taking to roll ball back and forth
- Stacking toys
- Puzzles
- Books: Read a lot and show them how you point to items and allow them to explore and do the same
- Shape sorter
- Push and pull toys
- Cheerios and other snacks (for pinching)
- Blocks
- Paper and markers or crayons
- Piggy bank
- Stringing beads or Cheerios
- Plastic hammer: ( this allows child to strengthen grasp and develop eye hand coordination).
